Aizen’s Battle: Courage, Resilience, and the Power of Support
Aizen was born with end-stage renal failure. He was on peritoneal dialysis until the age of two and a half, but then started experiencing complications with his peritoneal port. He was transitioned to hemodialysis, and since then, his journey has been filled with challenges, from persistent itching to multiple procedures.
At just five years old, Aizen has already undergone 14 vascular access surgeries and countless medical interventions. Despite it all, he remains a bright and joyful child who loves trains, knows his colors, numbers, shapes, and songs, and finds happiness in trips to the arcade and park.
Aizen requires dialysis three times a week in Nashville, and his medical journey has been anything but easy. He has battled two life-threatening infections that traveled from his catheter to his bloodstream, leading to a stroke that temporarily paralyzed the right side of his body. He underwent open-heart surgery to repair his mitral valve and remove the infection. Miraculously, he recovered well, regaining his ability to walk and talk.
However, Aizen’s battle wasn’t over. Later in the summer, another infection placed him back in the PICU, where he needed additional open-heart surgeries. One surgery replaced his left mitral valve due to severe infection, and the second stabilized his blood pressure as his body struggled to maintain fluid balance. Aizen was also placed back on the kidney transplant list, awaiting the opportunity for a new chance at life.
Through it all, Aizen’s mother has fought tirelessly to care for him, balancing his extensive medical needs while managing the financial burden that comes with it. With mounting hospital bills and ongoing treatments, rental assistance has been crucial in providing stability for their family.
Thanks to support from The Big Z Foundation, Aizen and his mother can focus on his recovery without the added stress of financial hardship. Your generosity makes a difference for families like Aizen’s, offering them hope, relief, and a helping hand in their most challenging times.
